My Slow Cooker's Demise

CRASH! The slow cooker lid slipped out of my grasp (the handle broke months ago) and landed with a bang on the stove. Immediately, shards of glass scattered on the floor and kitchen counter.

Of course, this accident occurred after my chicken tortilla soup had been simmering for a couple hours, ready for a Sunday evening dinner. My husband rushed upstairs to see what was wrong and found me standing amid lots of broken glass. He kindly cleaned up the mess (thank God I had worn shoes in the kitchen!), cutting two of his fingers in the process. I inspected the soup for extra shards of glass. We decided in the end to not eat the soup. The thought of minuscule glass shards cutting our intestines just didn't sit well with us. So we ended up eating out after Mass. I meant to get a picture of the pathetic, broken lid and glass-ridden floor, but forgot.

My slow cooker is one of the most frequently used appliances in the house, especially during soup season. There's nothing like opening the garage and catching a whiff of fragrant soup that has cooked all day long. Time to hunt for a newer model! "The best laid plans of mice and men..."

I guess the slow cooker gave up and wanted to be laid to rest. The broken handle on the lid didn't really get your attention so it used a more obvious sign :-) I think you should inaugurate a new slow cooker with your delicious tortilla soup!

Target and Walmart both have slow cookers on sale this week!! $15 at Target and $12 at Walmart. They were both stainless steel ones, though, so I'm not sure if you can remove the crock for cleaning.

And share your soup recipe, please! That's something I've always meant to make.

I find my slow cooker generally makes a mess of soup (or, at least, I have to put half of the ingredients in at the very end). Although the high setting with constant supervision works OK, but it's just like a lower-effort stock pot in that usage. So...apparently I need your recipes. Care to share the one for chicken tortilla soup?

Thanks for the tip, Aunt Mary. As for the recipe, I will post it later today. Thanks for asking! It's very easy because the ingredients are ready made: shredded chicken, garlic (you can use the jarred kind), chicken broth, canned tomatoes, and salsa. The ingredients cook on low for several hours.

How big of a pot do you need? I have a friend who offered me hers the other night, but I don't need it. I'll ask her if she still has it if you are interested.

OH, total bummer!!!

I'm so glad you decided not to eat the soup. To this day DH can't eat Shepard's Pie (not that we find ourselves presented with the opportunity to eat Shepard's Pie that often...) because as a kid he ate some with a piece of glass in it and tore his gums. Tortilla soup sounds way too good to never eat again due to negative associations with glass-eating :)

That sucks! I would love to have your recipe, I seem to not be in love with my crock pot. :(

Grace before meals--On your side bar. Fr. Leo used to be the priest at the chuch I used to attend when I lived at home!

Talk about an on fire Priest! OHHH! I LOVED HIM and the other Priest, I can't remember his name it was so long ago. They were great together! :) I need to see this show! :)

Heh heh heh, TCIE, I can understand why your husband avoids Shepherd's Pie. Did that happen at a restaurant? Hey Sew, did you know that Fr. Leo was recently on Food Network's "Throwdown" with Bobby Flay? Fr. Leo is such an amazing priest/cook and I love his recipes.
